Character Oak Kitchen

This is another smallish kitchen and it was difficult to photograph; I don't think my photos do it justice really. The first sketch shows you the layout.

Like many kitchens the working area is confined to one end of the room, in order to fit in a table and chairs at the other end and make the kitchen a very sociable room. The owners wanted a range cooker and a traditional mantel arrangement and there was just room to squeeze this in, along one wall, with a tall housekeeper's cupboard in the corner (with doors opening directly onto the worktop).

Wall space was very limited because of all the windows in the room - you can see the sun streaming in, in the photos - but a second tall wall cupboard was fitted in, again with doors right down to the worktop. This one was at right angles to the first - facing into the room, which looks good when you enter through the main door - but it could have looked slightly bitty. To avoid this, the two wall cupboards were joined with a flyover shelf and cornice - which also allowed lights to be situated over the sink area.

The kitchen is in solid,European character oak - not as busy as pippy oak but still with the odd feature knot or two - and is finished off with dramatically sparkling Emerald Pearl granite and tumbled marble wall tiles.

The oak gives a lovely feel to the kitchen and the pelmet above the window ties the two tall units together
My original sketch gives you a better idea of the whole layout. The "legs" of the mantel are hollow to give more worktop space.
The green range cooker was chosen to match the existing green floor tiles - which were retained (to help keep the cost down)
My original sketch was slightly different - but the lady of the house agreed the tile layout with the tiler
I love these tall cupboards and the way they change the proportions of the kitchen - making the ceiling look higher
The tall wall units are also very useful for storage - without stopping you from using the worktop inside
At first glance, I thought we wouldn't be able to fit everything into this kitchen ... but I'm pleased with the end result
