A larder cupboard is one of the most efficient ways of providing storage in the kitchen. Manufacturers of modular kitchens tend to provide a 500mm wide, tall unit at a standard 570mm depth, but that isn't a very useful size. My favourite size for a larder is 800mm wide but with a depth of just 350 – 400mm. Obviously it won't line up with other standard depth units but – if you can find space for one of these wide, shallow larders in your kitchen – it's a very useful size.
I visited some very impressive cabinetmakers the other day, at the Anglo Kitchen Company near Northampton. Nothing unusual in that, I work with quite a few different kitchen manufacturers and suppliers, and some of them are traditional cabinetmakers. I also worked full time for a cabinetmaking firm, a few years ago ... but Anglo are different.

The word "bespoke" is one that's used a lot in the kitchen industry ... in fact, it's probably used far too often. The dictionary definition can get confusing - "bespoke" comes from the verb "to bespeak" which had several different uses but came to mean ... to discuss beforehand. That was then applied, in particular, to the making of individual tailor made clothes, which obviously did need to be discussed in advance, to be sure that the finished garments were actually what the customer wanted.
No, I haven't gone mad - I know the Grand Designs Show at the NEC was last October - but going to the Homebuilding and Renovating Show there yesterday, reminded me that I never finished telling you about the displays that caught my eye last October.
The kitchen supplier that was going to be my Grand Designs Kitchens 3 - was also at yesterday's show - so I'll come back to him later. But before I go on to tell you about the interesting things I saw yesterday, I just want to catch up with one company from the Grand Designs Show.
It's my week for being trepidatious (although I'm not sure that's a word). I've just been reading a blog by kitchen design guru Johnny Grey. I normally hang on his every word. His book "The Art of Kitchen Design" was a revelation to me when I started out as a designer ... giving me an indication of what kitchen design should be all about ... and I heard him give a talk about his "kitchen central" concept, a few years ago, which was equally inspiring.
