Chairs

ChairsOf course, if you're buying a table, you'll need chairs to go with it ... but you may also need chairs for lowered breakfast bar areas in your kitchen ... or to go with a second hand table. Some antique farmhouse tables are a delight; adding character to a traditional style kitchen ... or providing a contrast to more modern kitchen units. Antique chairs are less of a delight, though. Our ancestors seem to have had smaller bottoms, somehow ... or perhaps it's all those years of the kids leaning back and balancing on two of the legs ... but antique chairs are rarely very robust. So - even if you're going for an antique table - Majjie suggests that you invest in new chairs.

These maple veneer chairs are great for anyone on a tight budget. They would look good with a glass table ... or have a look at M&S's round maple veneer table. They also come in a white finish.

Supplier: Cucina Direct  Guide price: £129.95 (with reductions if you buy more than one)

This is a classic Georgian style reproduction chair ... but it's so well made that you could let people think it was an original (we won't tell!). The slender yet sturdy dimensions, fluid lines and delicate reed detail blend into a really impressive piece of furniture.

Supplier: Pine Solutions   Guide Price: £150.50 per pair

These chairs are made from North American light oak with dark brown leather seats ... and they would match the Richmond Oak table also featured here (even though the oak comes from a different source).

Supplier: Pine Solutions  Guide Price: £132.58 per pair

These chairs have high backs - the same as the leather seated ones featured here - but the rush seat makes for a more traditional feel. They certainly don't look "country cottagey" though - with that tall elegant line.

These chairs match the Hampshire Painted Ivory Extending Table (also see "Table and Chair Sets"). They are made from the same materials ... painted pine legs and backs ... with solid oak and ash seats ... and are ideal for the smaller kitchen, especially for those with a tight budget.

For a dining area these modern looking chairs are not only good looking but comfortable too, compared with solid timber chairs. They're made from bi-cast leather with oak legs.

I love these cream chairs - cream leather looks great with oak - but not perhaps the best choice for kids. These are for the grown ups too.
