Small Appliances

Small Appliances

These are the small but necessary items that often adorn our kitchens, or ... with a bit of clever design work ... are hidden away, but within easy reach when needed.

Of course, some of them are designed to be looked at. Others (like my Remoska!) can get a bit tatty looking over the years but are still very much in use.

Don't go for trendy gadgets that just clutter up the worksurface. Choose the small appliances that you really need and that will fit in with your lifestyle.

DeLonghi Prima Donna Automatic Coffee Machine

Supplier: Cook In Style  Guide price: £999.99

You might expect me, as a kitchen designer, to recommend a built-in coffee machine - and for some people it does make sense. Don't rule out a free standing machine, though. It can be less obtrusive - sitting on the worktop - and this one, in particular, makes really brilliant coffee.

Supplier: JML Direct   Guide price: £69.99

If I didn't already have a Remoska, I'd be very tempted to buy a Halogen Oven. It's useful for the same sort of cooking but, by the sounds of it, is just that bit faster. It's also quite a bit cheaper than a Grand Remoska.

Supplier: Cook In Style   Guide price: £60

If you're planning a dinner party - or any sort of party - with hot food, this warming tray could be very useful. It's cordless and portable. After charging it up for 8 minutes, you can detach the cord and it will keep your food warm for an hour.

Supplier: Lakeland  Guide price: £299.99

I want one of these ... you just leave it to clean the floor, whilst you go and do something else. I'll have to save up. It's not just for the kitchen, of course; you can clean the whole house ... except for the stairs ... but really useful for the kitchen, where a lot of crumbs and pet hairs and just plain dirt from outside, seems to accumulate.

Kenwood Bread Maker

Supplier: Lakeland  Guide price: £99.99 free delivery

Much as I'd like to, I daren't add a bread maker to my wanted list ... my bread consumption would rocket ... and I struggle enough with my uhmm - healthy appetite - as it is. Some friends of mine have one, though, and I really look forward to visiting them for a meal and some delicious fresh baked bread. It's so much nicer than shop bought loaves.

Kenwood Electric Carving Knife

Supplier: Lakeland Guide price: £16.99

If you eat roast meat at all, then an electric carving knife is great for producing lovely succulent, thin slices of meat. It's also great for cutting thinnish slices of bread ... so you can buy the nicest looking un-sliced loaves ... no more doorsteps!

Kenwood Mini Chopper

Supplier: John Lewis   Guide price: £17

This is a great little gadget. You may already have larger machines and gizmos that will do what this mini-chopper does ... but this one works really well, is small enough to leave out on the worktop and - most importantly - is very easy to clean.

Use it for:

Kenwood Triblade Blender

Supplier: John Lewis Guide price: £64.95

This stick blender is a great compromise between price and performance and is designed specifically to do the things you most want a stick blender to do ... mash potatoes, whizz up soups to the right consistency, and whisk cream or egg whites.

Kuhn Rikon Pressure Cooker

Supplier: Lakeland  Guide price: £91.99 free delivery

I haven't got one of these yet - but it's on my wanted list! I know pressure cookers went out of fashion in the late 1970's when microwaves took the kitchen by storm ... but I do think they're worth re-considering in the 21st century.

Lakeland Stick Blender

Supplier: Lakeland   Guide price: £52.99

A hand held blender is an essential piece of kit - even for those who don't cook much - and this one's been selected specially by Lakeland, so you know it'll be good.

Magimix 11526 Vision Toaster

Magimix 11526 Vision Toaster

Supplier: John Lewis  Guide price: £160

In brushed stainless steel and glass, this toaster looks great and also allows you to see how your toast is doing. No more peering in at the top to see how brown your slices are!
