Apologies for my Absence - I'm Back Now!

I know that the latest newsletter is overdue and that I haven't added much here for a few weeks. I must also apologise to those of you whose plans are overdue.

Some of you already know that my Uncle Derek had a heart attack, was in hospital for four weeks and then died of pneumonia. I was very fond of him and will miss our conversations and outings once or twice a year.

Are you being Swindled by the Appliance Industry?

Well the service engineers of the UK Whitegoods web site think you are. They have just published a long article on the subject ... "The Great Washing Machine Swindle".

Worktop News

The so-called "solid surface" worktops have lost out in recent years to the really solid ones - like granite, timber and quartz composites.

Worktops like Corian, LG HI-MACS, Staron, Avonite and Apollo were called solid surface worktops - to distinguish them from the multiple, resin impregnated, paper layers of laminate worktops. They have the advantage of a huge choice of colours, virtually seamless joins, a smooth, non-porous, hygienic surface and the ability to make unusual shapes and profiled edges.

Dramatic Woodgrain for your Kitchen?

I mentioned the use of dramatic, decorative woodgrain finishes, for kitchen units, in my January newsletter. Some are in a matt finish, with a textured look, but there are also some very high gloss, woodgrain finishes about. Edwin Loxley - always a bit of a trend setter - had a splendid high gloss timber finish, on one of their displays at the recent KBB show, albeit without a very wild grain pattern.

The Sleekest Ovens and Coffee Machine I've Ever Seen

The vast majority of steam ovens and coffee machines are stainless steel ... and yet, many people are wary of steel because of it's propensity to show finger prints and greasy smears.

Even companies like Neff and AEG, who usually do black options on their ovens, only do their steam ovens and their coffee machines in stainless steel (or possibly aluminium).

That's why I was really interested to see a new company, V-ZUG, entering the UK market with some extremely sleek black glass models.

AirUno and Angled Cooker Hoods

I said I'd come back to AirUno and angled cooker hoods ... so here I am back!

Angled cooker hoods have become all the rage recently, possibly because of improved technology but also because cooker hoods have become more important in the general scheme of a kitchen ... more of a design statement than years ago.

Corner Hob

Just as a preview of the new appliance goodies which were on show at the KBB event; here is an L-shaped corner hob.

Photobucket

It comes from AirUno (about which more later) and there might be some issues with the worktop join. But what a good idea! Easy access to all the rings at once.

KBB Show Review

Well, I finally got to visit the KBB show at the NEC on Wednesday ... the last day of the show. I had planned to go on two days but you know how it is; something always comes up.

The show ran from Sunday to Wednesday and I'd heard on the grapevine that it wasn't that brilliant. I don't know what other people were expecting, because I found it fascinating.

Black Kitchens - Dramatic but Neutral

Many people are a bit scared of the highly patterned or brightly coloured kitchens that are currently trendy ... but would still love a kitchen which looks very up-to-the-minute.

Trade Appliances - Warning!

Don't buy your appliances from Trade Appliances! Or at least not at the moment. The company went into receivership last week.

Trade Appliances has been my favourite internet supplier for the past two years. They had both showrooms and a number of internet sites - the best of both worlds - or so I thought! And clients of mine that used them confirmed that the service was good.

It was after visiting one of the showrooms, that I started to recommend them ... but the original owner sold the company last year.
