Solid Surface Worktops - A Comparison
I've mentioned solid surfaces before but I've recently answered a few questions on different forums (fora?) about whether there are any worktops that are cheaper than granite but better quality than laminates ... mid-price worktops, if you like. So, I thought I'd have a closer look.
The answer is ... not really. The only possible alternative is to use resin "solid surface" worktops - so-called to distinguish them from the multiple resin impregnated, paper layers of the laminate worktops. Contrary to logic ... granite, solid timber and quartz composite worktops (Silestone, Caesarstone, Compaq, Pianoforte, Zodiaq, Luxore, Artestone, Arenastone, Apollo Quartz, Technistone ... and others) are not solid surface worktops.
The first solid surface worktop was DuPont's Corian, introduced into the UK in 1979. It's now available in over 100 colours but there is also competition from similar tops such as Staron, Avonite, LG Hi-Macs and Hanex. These are all 12 or 13mm thick materials which are fa...more >>

Baby Belling at the Fringe
You've got just five days left to see a Baby Belling starring with comedian, and BBC Radio 4 presenter, Chris Neill ... at the Edinburgh fringe.
"Chris Neill’s Got a Bun in the Oven" ... a comedy-cum-cookery show is on every evening until the 25th August.
I wouldn't myself want a Baby Belling ... not my idea of a style statement:
... but they're perenially popular with students (they can plug in anywhere) and apparently have something of a cult following.
You can pick up a second hand one for around £25, or a brand new one for about £250 with an extra £59 for that lovely stand.
There is a new arrival at Baby Belling though ... the Pronto. It's a little portable induction hob which will cost somewhere between £100 and £149 and comes with a free pan:
It is stylish and is also portable, safe, energy efficient and will heat up your baked beans in no time at all.
