Maria sent me an e-mail recently asking for an opinion about her kitchen design (it's a service that's included with Majjie's Kitchen Design Guide).
Her kitchen is for a large extension, being built onto a Victorian house, which will have a sloping roof/ceiling. It needs to have lots of storage and lots of worktop space (Maria has a big family).
Sorry ... couldn't resist the headline. It was prompted by an article by James Thompson from the Independent - saying that B&Q's prices in their January sale are very similar to the prices they were charging in October - and that their prices were increased in December, just so that they could reduce them in January and claim to be giving a 50% discount.
The only shock horror in that ... is if the Independent is surprised.
I mentioned Mark Wilkinson's new Shan Gara kitchen range in this month's newsletter. It has a dsitinct oriental flavour, which may become a theme for 2009.
Mark Wilkinson is very well known in the industry, for coming up with innovative ideas. His much copied (ssshhh ... don't tell him!) Cook's Kitchen, started the trend a few years ago, for traditional painted units with very large, stained timber knobs. His more recent styles have been less iconic (perhaps because nobody dares to copy them too closely any longer - Mr W is notoriously litigious).
I spent a few days at the Skiddaw Hotel, in Keswick, for some New Year celebrations ... which I can certainly recommend. Plenty of food, beautiful scenery (although I didn't fully appreciate it, until the second day - when the mist cleared) and lots of mulled wine.
It's back to work now ... and back to thinking about kitchens and kitchen design.
