I spent a few days at the Skiddaw Hotel, in Keswick, for some New Year celebrations ... which I can certainly recommend. Plenty of food, beautiful scenery (although I didn't fully appreciate it, until the second day - when the mist cleared) and lots of mulled wine.
It's back to work now ... and back to thinking about kitchens and kitchen design.
I've had a quick look at the kitchen-related news for the first few days of 2009 ... but I'll have some more in depth thoughts for the new Kitchen Design Newsletter ... yes, I know ... it's overdue, as usual!
What immediately came up, in my search, was an article by Kristin Knox in the Weekend House and Home Section of the Financial Times website; commenting on the continuing prevalence of curves in new kitchen designs. Interesting to note that upmarket kitchens are still using lots of curves ... but hardly news.
I also noticed a US article (you'd be hard pressed not to notice them if you do a fairly general search!) ... in the Homes and Gardens section of Redding.com (Redding is a town, or maybe a city, in California) ... saying that the trend for American apartments - and kitchens - is that they are getting smaller.
I know that's not particularly relevant to UK kitchen design ... but it's interesting.
If any of you have ever bought a book on kitchen design through Amazon ... or by any other mail order method ... you may have got an American book by mistake. And you'll soon realise that a small kitchen in the US is nothing like a small one in the UK. If you wanted some tips on designing for small UK kitchens, from US designers, then you would need to look out for books and articles with titles like: Designing Really Tiny Kitchens; or Fitting the Kitchen into a Cupboard! But perhaps all that is about to change.
I think I'll have a category for small UK kitchens in my new blog.
The new web site is currently under construction and the blog section will be a big improvement ... with categories and archives, and everything ... including a comment spam filter (hurray!). I can't wait.
